Brazil has announced to join China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), marking a significant shift in its foreign policy. This move was revealed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who emphasized the need to evaluate the benefits for Brazil from participating in the initiative. The announcement follows several high-level diplomatic engagements between Brazil and China, including a visit to Beijing by Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin in June 2024, during which agreements on sustainable development, agriculture, and infrastructure were signed.

China has expressed strong interest in Brazil joining the BRI, viewing it as a strategic enhancement to their already robust economic partnership. China has been Brazil’s largest trading partner since 2009, with bilateral trade reaching substantial levels. In 2022, Brazil’s exports to China hit a record $89 billion.
As a founding member of BRICS, Brazil has enjoyed a longstanding collaboration with China, fostering strong economic and strategic ties. Joining China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) further cements this robust relationship, providing mutual benefits through enhanced infrastructure development, trade, and investment. This move underscores the growing influence of the Global South in reshaping global economic dynamics, particularly within America's backyard.
