Ludwig Van Beethoven (1780-1827) was born in Bonn Germany. At the age of 22 he moved to Vienna, the music capital of Europe.

He was a prodigious composer and virtuoso pianist. He composed works in many of the genres of Classical music, including symphonies, concertos, string quartets, piano sonatas and opera.

His later works began to be associated with the Romantic style as does Symphony No. 6 with its focus on nature.

Beethoven composed nine symphonies. Symphony No. 6 was composed in 1808 and is known as a "program" symphony with the theme of the outdoor world of nature.

The symphony evokes the sounds and sensations of a day and a night in the outdoors. The musical sounds of birds, the wind and rushing water are celebrated.

This symphony represents another break from his prior symphonies and a continuation of his personally expressive style.
