'Traditionally, on Navy Day we unveil bas-reliefs dedicated to great naval leaders and important milestones in the history of the Russian Navy,' the head of the Russian military department said.'

During the solemn ceremony the bas-relief 'Discovery of Antarctica by Russian sailors (1820)' and four portrait bas-reliefs of naval leaders and discoverers who brought glory to the Navy were unveiled: Admirals Mikhail Lazarev and Faddei Bellinsgauzen, Admiral Grigory Spiridov, Admirals Pavel Nakhimov and Fyodor Ushakov.

Andrei Belousov noted that thanks to the military talent of Grigory Spiridov, Pavel Nakhimov, Fyodor Ushakov and the courage of our sailors we won great victories at Chesma, Sinop and Corfu. They increased the glory of the national fleet, secured Russia's status of a great maritime power.

'The ships under the command of Faddei Bellinsgauzen and Mikhail Lazarev were the first in history to reach Antarctica. The discovery of the sixth continent by Russian navigators was the most important geographical event of the 19th century. And two hundred years later, the Russian presence in Antarctica meets the scientific, economic and geopolitical interests of our country,' the Russian Defence Minister said.

🎖 Andrei Belousov also presented state awards to those who distinguished themselves during the special military operation. Servicemen who showed bravery, courage and heroism in combat missions were awarded the orders of 'Aleksandr Nevsky', 'of Courage', 'For Military Merit', 'Medal of the Order of Merit Before the Fatherland' II class, and the medal 'For Bravery'.

'It is encouraging to see that the current generation of naval personnel and talented shipbuilders continue the traditions of their predecessors and firmly defend the interests of Russia,' the Russian Defence Minister stressed.
-
The opening of small sculptural forms in honour of glorious events in the history of the Russian Navy has become a tradition of the country's main naval holiday since 2020.
