July 28, 2024, Joshua 20:1-9, "Jesus... My City Of Refuge" (Full)
Colossians 1:13-14, by the blood of Christ, being delivered out of slavery and distress, delivered out of death and sin
Joshua 20:1-6, the city of refuge, for the person that accidentally committed murder. However, the person had to remain in that city until the high priest of the city of refuge died. After that, the person could be released from the city and return back to their original house. During the "house arrest away from home" and afterwards, the avenger of blood (also seen as a type of death) could not touch the person who accidentally committed murder. There were historically 6 cities of refuge, and 6 is the number of humanity.
Romans 3:19, all humans are initially guilty before God.
Genesis 3:21, God had to kill an animal (most likely a lamb) to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve after they sinned
Colossians 1:13-14, Christ had to die to cover the sin of all humans, and any human that accepted His work on the cross would be saved from death and sin
1 Peter 5:8, the avenger of blood is primarily represented by the devil
Hebrews 6:17-18, God is now the city of refuge
Psalm 32:7, the 'hiding place' in Hebrew text here has the similar connotation to the Greek text in Hebrews 6:17-18
Psalm 119:114
John 10:9, in order for a person to go in (sentenced into) and out (released out) of the city of refuge, the high priest had to die. However, Christ died and then was resurrected. Christ is the door, and the saved person is no longer bound by death waiting outside the door: they can come and go freely with Christ. The death of the high priest in Joshua 20:1-6 was the payment for the judgment of the crime.
Hebrews 6:19-20, Leviticus, Genesis 3:21, Christ was not only the high priest, He was also the Lamb, and according to the law the Lamb was sacrificed outside the city of the temple veil.
Hebrews 4:14-16, believers are still sinners, even though they no longer practice sin (they will most likely commit a sin not leading to death per 1 John 1:10). They will still need to go to God's throne of grace to deal with the fact that they are still in the presence of sin.
Romans 6:7, 14, under the law of grace (judgment for sin has been paid off)
Psalm 127:7-8, being preserved in God's righteousness, even while coming in and and going out of refuge
Psalm 56:13, ability to walk/stand before God, given
