Making homemade Uncrustables
Making homemade Uncrustables is simple, fun, and a great way to ensure you know exactly what ingredients are going into your snacks. Here’s an easy and mess-free recipe to create your own at home.
Ingredients:
Sliced bread (white or whole wheat)
Peanut butter (or any nut/seed butter)
Jelly or jam (your favorite flavor)
Optional: other fillings like honey, Nutella, or fresh fruit slices
Tools:
A sandwich cutter or Uncrustable maker (a round cookie cutter or glass can also work)
A butter knife or spreader
A small spoon
Instructions:
Prepare Your Ingredients:
Lay out your slices of bread. Each Uncrustable will require two slices.
Have your peanut butter and jelly ready for spreading.
Spread the Fillings:
Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on one slice of bread. This will act as a barrier to prevent the jelly from making the bread soggy.
Spread a layer of jelly on top of the peanut butter. Be careful not to spread too close to the edges to avoid it spilling out when sealing.
If you’re using additional fillings (like honey or Nutella), add a thin layer on top of the jelly.
Top with the Second Slice:
Place the second slice of bread on top, creating a sandwich.
Cut and Seal:
Use your sandwich cutter or Uncrustable maker to press down firmly, cutting through both slices of bread. This will remove the crusts and seal the edges.
If you don’t have a specialized cutter, use a round cookie cutter or glass to cut out a circle. Then, use a fork to press and seal the edges all around.
Check the Seal:
Make sure the edges are sealed properly to prevent the filling from leaking. If necessary, press down again to ensure a good seal.
Storage:
You can eat the Uncrustables immediately or store them for later. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap or place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze. Once frozen, transfer them to a zip-top bag for longer storage.
Tips:
For a healthier option, use whole wheat bread and natural peanut butter without added sugar.
Experiment with different fillings like almond butter, sunflower seed butter, or different flavors of jelly and jam.
If you prefer a sweeter taste, add a drizzle of honey to the peanut butter before adding the jelly.
Enjoy your homemade Uncrustables as a quick and convenient snack or lunchbox treat!
