The Portage Bridge (French: Pont du Portage) spans the Ottawa River, connecting the communities of Gatineau, Quebec, and Ottawa, Ontario. Here are some key points about its history:

Construction and Location:
The bridge was built by the National Capital Commission in 1973 and later expanded in 1988.
It links Laurier Street and Alexandre-Taché Boulevard in the Hull sector of Gatineau with Wellington Street at the Garden of the Provinces and Territories in Ottawa.
The bridge crosses Victoria Island and the former Philemon Island on its way.
Historical Significance:
The Portage Bridge is named after the historic portage trail used by First Nations and later by voyageurs traveling across the Ottawa River around Chaudière Falls and the rapids1.
This trail allowed travelers to bypass the challenging waters and continue their journey.
Recent Improvements:
In 2019, construction work began to improve safety for the bidirectional cycle track, adjust motor vehicle lanes, repair drains and bridge expansion joints, and resurface the bridge’s northbound HOV lane2.
The Portage Bridge is not only a functional transportation link but also a nod to the region’s rich historical heritage. 🌉🇨🇦
The Rideau Canal is a 202 kilometre long[1] canal that links the Ottawa River at Ottawa with the Cataraqui River and Lake Ontario at Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Its 46 locks raise boats from the Ottawa River 83 metres upstream along the Rideau River to the Rideau Lakes, and from there drop 50 metres downstream along the Cataraqui River to Kingston.

Opened in 1832 for commercial shipping, freight was eventually moved to railways and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and it remains in use today for pleasure boating, operated by Parks Canada May to October.[3][4] It is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
