Arabic with Dariush - Iraqi Dialect - Lesson 01
Hi everybody,
This is the first lesson of Arabic - Iraqi Dialect.
In this video, I am going to introduce a video that I made by myself.
There are two characters in this video:
Basma, is an American-born Iraqi woman, and Kamaal is an Iraqi man. They meet each other and exchange the following greetings.
Dialogue
بسمة: مَرْحَبا
Basma: marhaba.
Hello.
كمال: مرحبا
Kamaal: marhaba.
Hello.
بسمة: شْلونك؟
Basma: shloonak?
How are you?
كمال: آني زين. الحمد لله. وِانْتي شْلونچ؟
Kamaal: aani zeen, ilhamdu lillaah. w-inti shloonich?
I am well, praise God. And how are you?
بسمة: آني زينة. الحمد لله. تْفَضَّل سْتَريح.
Basma: aani zeena, ilhamdu lillaah. tfaddal istariih.
I am well, praise God. Please sit down.
كمال: شكرًا.
Kamaal: shukran.
Thank you.
بسمة: الله بالخير.
Basma: allaa bil-kheer.
God bless (idiom).
كمال: الله بالخير.
Kamaal: allaa bil-kheer.
God bless (in reply).
بسمة: شلون الأهَل؟
Basma: shloon l-ahal?
How is the family?
كمال: زينين. الحمد لله. شلون وِلْدِچ؟
Kamaal: zeeniin, ilhamdu lillaah. Shloon wildich?
Well, praise God. How are your children?
بسمة: بْخير نُشْكُر الله
Basma: b-kheer, nushkur allah.
Well, thank God.
كمال: عن إذنِچ
Kamaal: 9an idhnich.
May I be excused?
بسمة: تفضّل.
Basma: tfaddal.
Please (in this context meaning: you are excused).
كمال: مع السلامة
Kamaal: ma9a s-salaama.
Goodbye.
بسمة: مع السلامة
Basma: ma9a s-salaama.

Vocabulary
مَرْحَبا marhaba. Hello (informal)

اللّه بالخير Allaah bil-kheer. God bless [(lit., God has brought goodness.) an idiom used in Iraqi dialect when someone comes in. As soon as the person sits down, they are greeted with this expression.]
الأهَل al-ahal Family
وِلْد wild children
وِلْدك wildak your children [your (masculine)]
وِلْدِچ wildich your children [your (feminine)]
وِلدكم wilidkom your children [your (plural)]
نُشْكُر الله Nushkur allah thank God
عن إذنك
9an idhnak May I be excused? (to a male) (It is an idiom used when somebody wants to take their leave. Literally means: with your permission)

9an idhnich May I be excused? (to a female)
عن إذنكم
9an idhinkom May I be excused? (plural)
تفضّل. Tfaddal. It has different meanings: Please, Go ahead, Here you are, etc.
