Why These Mags Are Legal in Canada | LAR-15 Pistol Magazine

The current #firearm legislation in #Canada pertaining to #magazine capacity limits is 5 for center fire, semi auto rifles or shotguns, and 10 for center fire, semi auto #pistols.

This is why the #LAR15 pistol magazine is completely legal to use in your rifle that can accept a standard #STANAG or #AR15 magazine.

Because the law only cares about the firearm for which the magazine was designed. Thus, if the magazine was designed for a pistol, you can use it in your #rifle with a 10 round maximum.

This restriction (with few exceptions) doesn't apply to other actions (such as #pumpaction or #boltaction) or to firearms which are designed to fire #rimfire ammunition.

There was also the "RCMP Special Bulletin 72 for Small Business" which detailed these restrictions and named the LAR-15 magazine BY NAME. Unfortunately, this is no longer accessible as it's been removed from the RCMP website.

Some examples from the above document:

Ruger PC Carbine (9mm)
A semi auto rifle that accepts Glock pistol magazines. The magazine is designed for a pistol. The limit for pistol magazines is 10. Therefore, the capacity of 10 is permitted in a rifle using these magazines.

Any AR Pattern Rifle (5.56/223)
A semi auto rifle that can accept regular STANAG or AR pattern magazines. Those designed for a rifle are limited to 5 rounds. Anything more will make the magazine a prohibited device.

10 rounds is also permitted if an LAR-15 magazine is used, as that magazine is designed for a PISTOL, not a RIFLE.

It's also possible to put cartridges that are smaller in size than what the magazine was originally designed for, thereby fitting more cartridges in the same magazine, if the firearm can safely discharge those cartridges and it's compatible with the magazine.
