On July 13, 2024, an assassination attempt was made on former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was shot in the upper right ear by Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks fired eight rounds from an AR-15-style rifle from a building approximately 400 feet from the stage. One audience member, Corey Comperatore, was killed, and two others were critically injured before Crooks was killed by the Secret Service's Counter Sniper Team​

Trump was quickly taken to a hospital, treated, and released in stable condition the same day. He later appeared at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee,

President Joe Biden ordered an independent review of the security arrangements at the rally, and the Secret Service faced criticism for security lapses, leading to the resignation of the agency's director​​.
