Flights to and from Catania, a city in eastern Sicily, were halted on Tuesday due to an eruption from Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes.

The eruption, which spewed hot ash and lava, led to the airport’s closure earlier this month as well.

As a major hub in eastern Sicily, Catania’s airport typically handles more arrivals than Palermo, the island’s capital.

Authorities announced the suspension of all flights, causing cancellations and rerouting to other airports, primarily Palermo, the Independent has reported.
