The Greenshank is a wading bird you might spot around the UK's coasts and wetlands. It's got long greenish-grey legs, which is how it got its name. These birds are pretty big, about the size of a pigeon, with a long, slightly upturned beak that's perfect for catching small fish and insects.
Greenshanks breed in the northern parts of Europe and Asia, but they pop down to the UK for a visit during spring and autumn. Some even stick around for the winter. They're not fussy eaters and will munch on all sorts of small water creatures.
When they're breeding, Greenshanks like to hang out in boggy areas or near pools in forests. But during their holidays in the UK, you're more likely to see them on mudflats, estuaries, or around lakes.
If you're out birdwatching, listen for their call - it sounds a bit like "teu-teu-teu". And keep your eyes peeled for their distinctive bobbing motion when they walk!
