The Scottish Rite stands as a "Full Rite of Freemasonry" and not an appendant body. Master Masons from other rites may, in some countries, join the Scottish. There are 29 regular degrees, which follow the three degrees conferred in blue lodges. The 33˚ is honorary and is conferred only by the Supreme Council, the governing body of Scottish Rite Masonry. Antecedents of Scottish Rite existed in Albany, New York as early as 1767. As the Rite's growth continued across the country, a Supreme Council was established in Charleston, South Carolina in 1801 to regulate the degrees and practices.
The Scottish Rite degrees actually originated in France and were based on legends that came from Scotland, so “Scottish” is in name only. How many people belong to the Scottish Rite? There are about 1.7 million Masons in the United States and about 550,000 of those are Scottish Rite Masons.
