Aquileia is ancient Roman City: Founded in 181 BC, Aquileia was a major Roman city and one of the most important urban centers of the Roman Empire in the northern Adriatic region. It was a hub for trade, military, and administrative activities.
Situated at the junction of major Roman roads, Aquileia was strategically important for controlling the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
The city declined after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and suffered further damage during invasions by barbarian tribes. It eventually became a center for Christianity, with its bishopric playing a significant role in the early medieval church.
Aquileia is renowned for its extensive and well-preserved archaeological remains. The site includes Roman ruins such as baths, forums, and city walls.
