Starmer can control EVERY aspect of your life if this law passes.
Right, so if I’m saying to you, ‘Starmer can take over every aspect of your life if this law passes’, that’s a bit of a scary statement Damo you might be thinking and you would be right to think so because I fully intend it to be, because you should be very alarmed at what Labour under Keir Starmer has brewing, something he included in the King’s Speech, which has gone by most people quite innocuously, but the ramifications of which should actually be of the gravest concern to everybody, because although he might say this law going through will make life easier for you, it also makes it a lot easier for him and the government to control almost every aspect of your life and given Keir Starmer is such an authoritarian control freak, there is absolutely nothing about this that tells me he wouldn’t press ahead with it. We’ve seen how he’s treated the membership of the Labour Party itself over the last few years, their membership of certain groups used against them, but should he enact this latest plan of his, he’ll be able to treat the entire nation in the same way as he’s treated his party and he’ll do it by dressing this up as convenience to you.
Right, so what are we talking about her then Damo, well Starmer is basically resurrecting that old Blairite plan of ID cards, except these will now be digital IDs for more modern times and indeed the sales pitch is one of convenience. With one of these IDs you will be able to open a bank account, or pay your taxes, or buy alcohol without the need for all the additional verification that typically comes along with such things, oh that will make life so much easier and yes it, would, for as long as you live your life within the narrow constraints that the government of the day demands of you. When that government is led by an authoritarian control freak like Keir Starmer though, you should be very concerned about the price you’ll pay for it, not in financial terms, no doubt, these IDs would be given away from free, but the cost to your liberties and how the government could use your information to control your life virtually in every single aspect you can think of.
Imagine for example if your ID ends up being used to prove your identity for a prospective employer, but also imagine for a moment that the government were to do a deal with major social media platforms so that your digital ID were to enable you to open a social media account as well, in fact as much as the government are apparently saying it won’t be mandatory to have a digital ID imagine it became mandatory under such a social media deal, that you couldn’t have an X account unless you verified this ID – who would be view your socials? Work would be able to, the government would be able to. Imagine how that could affect you if you were a protester for example. Could cost you your job, could enable the government to find you before you take any action, I mean just look at what they’ve done with those Just Stop Oil protesters, 5 of them locked up for a combined 21 years, simply for taking a Zoom call. In that case they were tipped off by a Murdoch Scum reporter apparently, but monitoring your ID, enabling security forces, police, whoever to monitor your socials, would be the tip off.
Fundamentally, we can all already prove our identities, so this scheme, is not solving any problem that requires a solution. It’s not needed, this was the argument when Blair tried it, now Starmer is having a go and with his massive majority, it’s certain to become law and then we’ll see if my concerns are justified, but equally, it’s also been tried before elsewhere and has been a proven cause of human rights abuses elsewhere, because your right to privacy, your right to freedom of expression, your right to privacy and liberty, your right to freedom of thought could end up and likely will end up, being abused by this.
We have a right to have anonymity, many people for various reasons if I come back to social media, are entitled to privacy, are not required to prove their real identity and frankly if it only applies to the UK on a global platform, it’s not even that useful to the social media platform itself, it will simply be a tool that can be used to discriminate against certain people who are doing things they have a right to, but those in positions of power or privilege don’t want them doing. Public visibility is a choice and this would strip of that, violating human rights.
We don’t need one, central ID system for people to have an identity, we already have our identities, all this does is give those in positions of power control over our identity, with the ability to freeze us out of social media potentially, or freeze our bank assets even, to make our lives impossible, if we don’t adhere to certain rules we don’t exist under right now.
Rather than empower people with a much easier life, to prove their identity for a multitude of reasons, we’re giving away too much when we can already prove who we are via other means. Sure, it might take longer to get a passport, or it might be a hassle to gather up some utility bills and prove your last 3 months of earnings or so on and so forth, but it isn’t empowering to save yourself that effort, when what you give away is potentially so much greater.
It would also form the foundation of what would basically be a surveillance state. Starmer already recruited a former Israeli intelligence operative to spy on Labour members, we know he’s done this, a guy called Assaf Kaplan, so why would you imagine he wouldn’t do this for the entire nation? It also begs the question of who such data would be shared with as well. For one I’m asking myself who would get the contract to deliver such a digital ID and on the other hand I’m asking myself how much is our data worth to the government? Facebook as an example makes it's money out of selling our data and behaviours that we share with it, all of a sudden, we can become a brand new product for the government to sell too in the same way. Who will benefit from that? Which Labour donors could be salivating on that score to get even richer at our expense as they do already, only this time, we’d literally be the product they’re getting richer off the back of too. Labour don’t do anything themselves, just like the Tories they’ll outsource this. Who to and how do we know our data is safe with them?
Let’s stick with this theme of the rich benefitting for a moment. In that vein you can imagine the government having the ability to check bank accounts just as the Tories wanted to and there was hell up about that, to look for welfare fraud. Certainly they could do that and we’d know nothing about it, we’d given the government the right to di it, by signing up for a digital ID. Do you think they’d do the same with tax evasion and avoidance though? Frankly if they didn’t, given one alleged use of this ID according to the Murdoch Times is paying taxes more easily, it would beg the question why, because they could, or will they cast a blind eye over tax havens for example? Daren’t impede the lives of their donors possibly?
Where arguments will be made that this will make our lives more efficient, it begs the question more efficient for us or the government’s aims? Where there will be claims it increases transparency, that would only apply to us and not how this data will potentially be used or abused.
Where there will be claims that you freely gave your data over to the government and you only have yourself to blame, they are not telling us what limits would be placed on the use of this data, so further lack of transparency and where they say it won’t be mandatory, in practice it may be impossible going forwards to not be forced to accept it to live your life and access the services that you need and require. Banking, employment could all be functionally impossible without it, it’s happened before, we’ve seen it in China, where upon arrival and departure every single person is scanned, therefore the government can track and trace the movements of everyone. We’ve seen it in India, the Aadhaar system that’s been in use since 2009, just look it up for yourselves and think about whether that’s a situation you’d want to live under and if you’ve got this far and you’re thinking the government would never do this, this is conspiracy theorism, but this is Starmer and I’ve been covering his actions, both as a Labour Party member and outside of the party for long enough to realise this is a guy for whom control is everything and I’ve noted a couple of examples where this has been borne out in this video. It's Big Brother all over again, it’s 1984, it’s Big Starmer, but most of all, the justification of it that they will claim, just isn’t there. The price is just too high to accept this, there’s no problem to solve by it, it will lead to greater surveillance on us all, we’d all end up on a database full of our information, a ready made product to sell, all of our movements would be monitored and arguably worst of all as we see certain demographics abused and targeted in this day and age, not least by Labour itself and it’s hierarchy of racism, it would increase that discrimination and harassment and that racial profiling and targeting that always comes with it.
Meanwhile, if you think Starmer is above doing grubby deals with the rich and powerful and still wouldn’t abuse your data, you clearly have no idea about him chasing around Rupert Murdoch not only for his backing in the most recent General Election, but having actually been doing so for years. Check that story out in this video recommendation here and I’ll hopefully catch you on the next vid. Cheers folks.
