"What if a broken heart could be fixed... by removing it?" Cineverse has debuted their own trailer for the streaming release of an indie romantic drama titled With Love and a Major Organ, made by filmmaker Kim Albright. It sort of reminds me of The Lobster. This premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and it already opened last year on VOD, but we missed it during that run. Now that Cineverse will be streaming it on their platform soon, here's the two main trailers. In an alternative universe, human hearts are not made of organic matter but are actually complex, tangible objects. Suppressing one's emotions is not only normal but encouraged. One woman is so distraught over a man she loves, that she decides to rip out her heart for him, only to find that he has run off... Starring Anna Maguire, Hamza Haq, Donna Benedicto, Veena Sood, Arghavan Jenati, Ryan Beil, and Laara Sadiq. This newest trailer is a bit strange because they removed all the dialogue? Not sure why. In a world where everyone's heart is an object and there's a strong societal pressure to dampen emotion, lonely Virtual Insurance broker Anabel (Anna Maguire) always follows her heart. At odds with this overly pragmatic society, and after a series of devastating emotional blows, she rips her heart from her chest and gives it to a man she's fallen for, the strangely unfeeling George (Hamza Haq). Unburdened by her unique yet cumbersome heart, Anabel finds life easier. George, on the other hand, begins to feel everything, to the shock of his overbearing mother, Mona (Veena Sood). Anabel soon realizes she needs to get her heart back if she's going to survive. With Love and a Major Organ is directed by Canadian-British-Filipina filmmaker Kim Albright, director of the film Bring Out Your Dead and many other shorts previously. The screenplay is written by Julia Lederer. This originally premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, and it also screened at Fantasia. It's already available to watch on VOD and Blu-ray right now. Cineverse will release With Love and a Major Organ streaming on Cineverse starting July 23rd, 2024 this summer. Look good?

In a fantasy world paralleling our own, two lost souls find a fleeting connection amid a landscape of toxic self-care. The majority of people inhabiting this realm exist in a detached emotional state, and plan their lives virtually through an app called LifeZapp. On the fringes of this society, human hearts are glowing objects that people can rip from their bodies and exchange with one another.

The story follows Anabel (Maguire), a passionate artist working a dull job at a virtual insurance company. Her high-strung emotional attachment can be a bit extra for the others in her sphere who bury their own feelings. We also find George (Haq), an impassive young man who is content living a bland existence with his overprotective mother Mona (Sood). When Anabel meets George in a park one day, she is struck by his peculiar point-of-view. When she offers him her heart, George doesn’t reciprocate her feelings, but runs off with Anabel’s luminous organ anyway. This act sets them both on a course to confront unresolved issues stemming from generational trauma.

With Love and a Major Organ is based on a play by screenwriter Lederer. Together with director Albright, they orchestrate an alternate universe fashioned with surreal flourishes that distinguishes their collaboration from the glut of sci-fi adjacent satires. The narrative is less about two weirdos falling in love and more about healing from the effects of interpersonal relationships forged in dysfunction, fear, and insecurity. Cinematographer Leonardo Harim’s widescreen compositions evoke isolation, capturing a chasm of loneliness among people occupying the same space. The film’s thrifty world-building capitalizes on a minimal aesthetic while cultivating rich commentary on our rapidly eroding social fabric. At the center of it all is Anabel and George, whose longings for connection begin with a painfully honest look inward.
