You'll want to discuss the rent-to-income ratio. Simply put this describes what percentage of your income you'll need to pay rent each month. For example, if your income is $3,500 per month and the rent for an apartment that you're looking at is $1,000 then the rent-to-income ratio would be $1,000 divided by $3,500 or 28.5%.
