Koyasan is a sacred place of Shingon esoteric Buddhism opened by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) at the beginning of the Heian period, located in the mountaintop basin at an altitude of about 800m in Wakayama Prefecture. It is also certified as a World Heritage site as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range".
