A UAE court has sentenced 57 Bangladeshi nationals to prison for participating in unauthorized protests against their own government's policies. The protests, which took place in the UAE, were against the Bangladeshi government's decision to reinstate a controversial quota system. Three individuals received life sentences, 53 received 10-year sentences, and one received an 11-year sentence for "inciting riots" and "unauthorized gathering". The protests in Bangladesh have been ongoing, with students demanding job quota reforms amidst high unemployment. The UAE, which has a large Bangladeshi expat community, prohibits unauthorized protests and has strict laws against offending foreign states or jeopardizing diplomatic ties.
