האחות אליזבת קני גילתה טיפול מהפכני בשיתוק תינוקות והקדישה את חייה להפצת הטיפול ברחבי ארה"ב ומחוצה לה. לאחר שרופאים בחופים המזרחיים והמערביים דחו את רעיונותיה, האחות קני הגיעה למינסוטה בשנת 1940. היא עבדה עם רופאים במרפאת מאיו ובמיניאפוליס ופתחה את מכון האחות קני בשנת 1942. היא יצאה נגד הטיפולים המסורתיים בפוליו ודחקה בכך יש להפעיל את הגפיים הכואבות. הליך זה פתח את העידן המודרני של הרפואה השיקומית והפיזיותרפיה
