Dec. 11, 1988 - Despite dropping a hard-fought, 13-12 decision to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, Detroit earned respect under interim head coach Wayne Fontes for its play against a highly regarded Chicago team. LB Chris Spielman's nine tackles headed a Lion defensive unit that held Chicago to 250 total yards. Detroit QB Rusty Hilger (195 yards passing) engineered a late fourth quarter TD drive to put the Lions ahead 12-10, but a blocked extra point would prove to be costly. The Bears' Jim Harbaugh retaliated with a 55-yard drive, setting up a 32-yard field goal by Kevin Butler with four seconds remaining in the game.
