New York City is especially notorious for renters being charged broker fees at least equivalent to one month's rent. Boston is another market where it's common for renters to pay broker's fees. In these two cities, renters may have to pay the broker fee even if they find the rental on their own. In the rest of the country, broker fees are paid by the landlord to their property management company or they advertise and find new renters themselves.
