The story takes place in 1820, United Kingdom. The plot follows the romance between paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet), who makes important scientific discoveries of marine ammonite fossils (a type of mollusk) along the English Channel, and a young Londoner (Saoirse Ronan), who lives by the sea while your health recovers.
