French police used tear gas to disperse climate activists gathering in western France on Saturday (July 20). The protesters oppose the building of water reservoirs for agricultural use. The basins, heavily financed by the French state, are designed to store water in winter in order to irrigate crops during increasingly dry summers. Opponents say storing groundwater in the open exposes it to evaporation and potential contamination.
