Alan Ball exploited his friendship with Johan Cruyff, Barcelona’s manager, to set up a loan-deal (with an option to buy for £500,000) involving their young play-maker, Ronnie Ekelund, a Denmark U-21 international. He was an immediate hit with the fans, as he readily established an uncanny understanding with Matt Le Tissier. Their instant rapport has endured as a mutual admiration-society, as they demonstrated when enthusing about Ronnie’s goal, from a Tiss assist – his third Saints goal in only his third start – v Everton. Interviewed for Matt’s testimonial programme in 2002, Ronnie explained how he “knew where Matty was going to put the ball for me” – they had “clicked from day one.”

So fantastic as to pose the question: whatever could have persuaded Barcelona to offload a midfielder with Ronnie’s timing, ball-skills, pace and finishing ability? Well, with La Liga’s restrictions on foreign players, he had been queuing behind his compatriot, Michael Laudrup, and others. And now it emerged that he was carrying a back injury. Southampton’s doctors advised an operation, but Ronnie was reluctant to go under the knife. So any hopes of a permanent signing foundered.

Other Premiership clubs took him on loan, but his early sparkling form for the Saints seemed to have deserted him and he was soon back in Denmark. Ray Graydon, who had been on Southampton’s coaching staff while Ronnie was there, wooed him back to England, for a few games at third-tier Walsall, but Ronnie was soon heading for the USA. Following a successful stint with the San Jose Earthquakes, he played indoors, for a while, with the California Cougars, before returning to the Earthquakes in an advisory capacity. None of which was going to prevent him returning to Southampton in May 2002 to play in Le Tissier’s testimonial.
