A man armed with a knife died at a hospital after an officer-involved shooting June 20 in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 12800 block of 10th Street., just north of Riverside Drive, the Chino Police Department reported.

Jose Angel Mendoza, 43, of Chino, was identified Wednesday as the man who died in the 10:18 p.m. shooting, Sgt. Frank Acuna said.

Chino police were called to the 10th Street apartment complex on a report of a domestic violence incident inside an apartment unit, Sgt. Acuna said.

“Offices arrived and were contacted by an individual in the parking lot of the complex. The individual pointed out the male subject involved in the incident and informed the officers that the subject was armed with a knife,” the sergeant said.

An officer tried de-escalating the situation with the man, who then brandished a knife and refused to comply with police, Sgt. Acuna said.

“The subject then advanced on the officer with the knife raised above his head and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Sgt. Acuna said.

Officers began life-saving efforts until Chino Valley Fire District paramedics arrived. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sgt. Acuna said.

No officers were injured, he said.
