đŸ“ē This 🍭 Special Treat đŸŦ is especially exciting for us, Gen X! As the first music video to premier on MTV on August 1, 1981 at 12:01 AM (HAPPY 43rd ANNIVERSARY, BUGGLES!), The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star had already rocketed to the charts in the No. 1 slot internationally in Europe by the time it hit No. 40 in the US charts and later left a permanent mark in music history, covered by artists the world over - from Ken Laszlo to The Art of Noise. The irony in today's times is that social media killed the star. There are really no more major celebrities being made today outside of it. Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes, as Andy Warhol predicted. We went from the Golden Age of radio, the Golden Age of TV, the Golden Age of YouTube, and podcasting. And us Xers grew up on radio and TV. Later we transitioned to the Internet and all it has to offer. Now, we even use it as a common, not proper, noun, ala internet. We learned how to use social media in all of its many forms. We rock. You can't touch the 70s and 80s.

The Buggles, formed in 1977, consisted of Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, and initially Bruce Woolley. The trio recorded the first demo of the song in 1978, and it quickly became a dance classic. The song's lyrics reflect on the rapid technological changes in media arts and the nostalgia for a bygone era. Horn and Woolley drew inspiration from J.G. Ballard’s short story "The Sound-Sweep" and the innovative sounds of Kraftwerk, envisioning a future shaped by video and technology. Guess they were right! 🤖
