The protests demand the end of the quota system that, according to the opponents, benefits young people from families close to the leftist 76-year-old prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has governed the country since 2009.

At least 17 people died during clashes at protests across Bangladesh on Thursday, local media reported, as authorities blocked mobile services across most of the South Asian country.

Bangladesh authorities cut some mobile internet services to quell protests against civil service hiring quotas.
Two days earlier, internet providers had cut off access to Facebook – the protesters’ key organizing tool.
Multiple people shared videos and photos of the clashes between protesters and security forces, including where security forces open fire on protesters.
