Early Life and Marriage:
St. Symphorosa lived during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD). She was married to St. Getulius, a Roman military officer who converted to Christianity. They had seven sons: Crescens, Julian, Nemesius, Primitivus, Justin, Stacteus, and Eugene.

Persecution:
During Emperor Hadrian's reign, Christians faced severe persecution. Getulius and his brother, St. Amantius, were arrested for their faith. Getulius was martyred by being beaten and then beheaded, along with his brother.

Martyrdom of St. Symphorosa and Her Sons:
After her husband's martyrdom, Symphorosa continued to practice and profess her Christian faith. Her unwavering commitment to Christianity brought her to the attention of the Roman authorities. Emperor Hadrian ordered her and her seven sons to be arrested.

The family was subjected to severe torture to force them to renounce their faith. Symphorosa was beaten and then drowned in the Anio River. Her sons were also martyred, each in a different manner, reflecting the brutal ways early Christians were persecuted:

Crescens was pierced with arrows.
Julian was beaten to death.
Nemesius was beheaded.
Primitivus was stabbed.
Justin was thrown from a great height.
Stacteus was torn apart.
Eugene was beheaded.
Legacy:
St. Symphorosa and her sons are remembered for their steadfast faith and courage in the face of brutal persecution. Their martyrdom is celebrated on July 18. They are venerated as saints in the Roman Catholic Church, and their story has inspired many Christians throughout the centuries.
