"The only thing you can't get back is time. It goes by so fast." Amazon MGM Studios has revealed an official trailer for an indie coming-of-age dramedy titled My Old Ass, which first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, also showing at the Provincetown & Sydney Film Fests. It's the latest feature from Canadian filmmaker Megan Park, produced by Margot Robbie, and set / shot up in Canada following a young woman at the end of her time living at home before she heads to university. A mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott face-to-face with her 39-year-old self - starring Aubrey Plaza as the "older" version of herself. But when Elliott's "old ass" delivers warnings, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, life, and love. She ends up tumbling into a romance with a worker boy named Chad, played by Percy Hynes White. My Old Ass stars Maisy Stella as Elliott, with Maddie Ziegler, Kerrice Brooks, Maria Dizzia, and Al Goulem. This has a different vibe than you might be expecting, it's not really a time travel film, it's more of a heartfelt coming-of-age flick made in Canada about respecting the process of growing up.

Here's the first official trailer for Megan Park's film My Old Ass, direct from YouTube:

My Old Ass Movie

"Growing up is a trip." In this fresh coming-of-age story from writer & director Megan Park, an 18th birthday mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott (Maisy Stella) face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). But when Elliott's "old ass" starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what’s becoming a transformative summer. My Old Ass is written & directed by Canadian actress / singer / filmmaker Megan Park, making her second feature film after directing The Fallout previously, plus many other music videos. Produced by Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, Steven Rales, and Margot Robbie. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Amazon MGM Studios will debut Park's My Old Ass film in select US theaters starting on September 13th, 2024 later this year. Look good?
Amazon releases trailer for My Old Ass, a heartwarming coming-of-age drama with Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella.
The film, directed by Megan Park, follows a teenager who meets her future self and receives life advice.
Praised for Plaza's performance and Park's direction, My Old Ass has a 92% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Amazon has just dropped the first trailer for My Old Ass, the critically adored, light-hearted drama, and it looks like it'll become a firm favourite with audiences for years to come. In this refreshing and heartfelt twist on the classic coming-of-age story, free-spirited teenager Elliott (Maisy Stella) meets her wisecracking 39-year-old future self (Aubrey Plaza)—and can’t escape her influence. On the brink of leaving for college, Elliott is set on having one last summer full of fun and romantic flings. The film is directed by Megan Park (The Fallout).

To celebrate her 18th birthday, she heads to a remote island with her best friends to trip on mushrooms. Just when Elliott thinks the experience isn’t affecting her, she finds herself conversing with a woman who claims to be her future self—literally. When asked for advice, her future self gives one key piece of guidance: avoid anyone named Chad, which seems simple enough. However, when Elliott meets the very Chad (Percy Hynes White) she was warned about, things get complicated. Elliott begins to consider the lessons her future self might teach her...and vice versa.

How Good Is 'My Old Ass'?
The film already sits at 92% Positive on Rotten Tomatoes after its debut at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Collider's Ross Bonaime adored the film, labelling it "delightful" and hailing Plaza's "powerful performance". Bonaime also praised Park's leadership behind the camera.

This is also an excellent performance from Plaza, and while she doesn’t get much screen time, her interactions with the younger Elliott are the film’s best moments. While their scenes together are often comedic, with amusing banter full of self-awareness, it’s their final scene that makes My Old Ass into something truly special.

Park’s writing and directing make this a playful coming-of-age tone, but also with the awareness that we can’t hold on to the moments that we don’t want to lose. There’s a sadness to that idea inherently, but also a beauty to it—as though every day is something that we should appreciate and delight in. That mixture of beauty and sadness is palpable, a perfect atmosphere for the last days of summer and the last days at home. Park’s story has all the makings of a future coming-of-age favorite for both 18-year-olds ready to make their way in the world, and 39-year-olds nostalgic for the merits of youth.

My Old Ass opens in theatres on September 13. Check out the trailer above.

Aubrey Plaza doles out wisdom to her younger self in the first trailer for “My Old Ass,” a coming-of-age comedy that premiered to rave reviews at Sundance Film Festival.

The film takes place the summer before 18-year-old Elliot Labrant (Maisy Stella of Lennon & Maisy fame) heads to college in Toronto. In the trailer, Plaza shows up as the middle-aged version of herself while the present-day Elliot is tripping on shrooms in the woods. At first, the younger Elliot doesn’t believe what she’s seeing — and it’s not like they look anything alike.

“You’re me? I don’t have a gap in my teeth,” Stella’s character tells Plaza’s as they sit around a campfire. She’s quick to respond: “Yeah, wear your retainer.”

The 39-year-old Elliot urges her younger self to be nicer to mom and spend more time with her brothers. She also cautions against falling in love with anyone named Chad. (Seems easy enough…) Of course, Elliot then meets the boy she was warned about, sparking a funny journey of self-discovery before she leaves her childhood home.

“I’m actually kind of hot for middle age,” the younger Elliot tells her elder. It hits a nerve. “I’m 39 years old,” older Elliot retorts. “That’s not middle-aged. I’m a very young adult.”

Amazon MGM bought “My Old Ass” for $15 million in one of this year’s biggest Sundance sales. The studio plans to open the film in limited theaters on Sept. 13 with a national rollout to follow. LuckyChap, the company co-founded by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, produced the film with Scythia Films and Indian Paintbrush.

“My Old Ass” was written and directed by Megan Park, the “Secret Life of the American Teenager” star-turned-filmmaker. Her first feature was 2021’s “The Fallout,” which opened at South by Southwest and landed at HBO Max.

At Sundance, Park said wants “My Old Ass” to feel like an escape from adult life.

“I kept thinking about this idea: there was a time when you did something like play pretend with your friends, and then you just never did it again,” she told the audience at the sold-out premiere in Park City. “That made me really emotional. I also wanted to immerse myself in a joyful film and something that made people feel nostalgic for an easier, simpler time in life. Because life can be hard and shitty sometimes.”
