"It' quite innocent." Get ready for some debaucherous 80s fun! Hulu has unveiled a quick teaser trailer for an upcoming series titled Rivals, adapted from the book of the same name written by Dame Jilly Cooper. Set within the social elite of 1980s England, Rivals stars Alex Hassell as Rupert Campbell-Black, an ex-Olympian & Member of Parliament who is described as "an incorrigible rake, and dangerously charismatic." David Tennant in turn plays Lord Tony Baddingham, controller of Corinium Television — and Rupert's single-mindedly ambitious and egotistical foe. Set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, Rivals delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986 – where it's every man and woman for themselves. This TV series also stars Bella Maclean as Taggie O’Hara, Katherine Parkinson as Lizzie, Nafessa Williams as Cameron Cook, Emily Atack as Sarah Stratton, Catriona Chandler as Caitlin O'Hara, with Oliver Chris, Danny Dyer, Rufus Jones, Lisa McGrillis, Luke Pasqualino, Claire Rushbrook, and Victoria Smurfit. Looks like Succession but for England instead, with all the usual mayhem from the 80s creeping into every frame.

Into the cut-throat world of Corinium television comes Declan O'Hara, a mega-star of great glamour and integrity with a radiant feckless wife, a son and two teenage daughters. Living rather too closely across the valley is Rupert Campbell-Black, divorced and as dissolute as ever, and now the Tory Minister for Sport. Declan needs only a few days at Corinium to realise the Managing Director, Lord Baddingham, is a crook who has recruited him merely to help retain the franchise for Corinium. Baddingham has also enticed Cameron Cook, a gorgeous but domineering woman executive, to produce Declan's programme. Declan and Cameron detest each other, provoking a storm of controversy into which Rupert plunges with his usual abandon. As a rival group emerges to pitch for the franchise, reputations ripen and decline, true love blossoms and burns, marriages are made and shattered, and sex raises its (delicious) head at almost every throw as, in bed and boardroom, the race is on to capture the Cotswold Crown. "Beg your pardon."

Rivals is a series created by Happy Prince, which is part of ITV Studios. With writing by Sophie Goodhart, Marek Horn, Mimi Hare, Clare Naylor, Dare Aiyegbayo, and Kefi Chadwick. Based on the novel of the same name written by Jilly Cooper. The series is directed & showrun by Elliot Hegarty, with other eps directed by Dee Koppang O'Leary and Alexandra Brodski. Produced by Eliza Mellor. Executive produced by Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Alexander Lamb, Felicity Blunt, Laura Wade, Cooper, & Lee Mason. Hulu will debut this Rivals series streaming on Hulu sometime later in 2024 - stay tuned for a final date. Who wants to watch?
Horses, helicopters and hanky-panky are what fans of Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel “Rivals” can expect from Disney’s screen adaptation.

Starring Emily Atack (“The Inbetweeners”), David Tennant (“Doctor Who”) and Aidan Turner (“Poldark”), “Rivals” follows the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England as they break up and couple up.

In the first teaser trailer, which dropped today, Tennant can be seen dressed as an upper crust gentleman farmer, Turner dons a smart suit and Tom Selleck-inspired bushy moustache while Atack adjusts herself in front of a full-length mirror clad in a period-inspired bodycon dress.

Popular on Variety
“Rivals” is part of Cooper’s bestselling “Rutshire Chronicles.” It follows two powerful men and neighbors – Olympian turned politician Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and television executive Tony Baddingham (Tennant) – have a longstanding rivalry that finally comes to a head. With Cooper nicknamed “Queen of the Bonkbuster” the novel is also unsurprisingly pretty steamy — and judging from the teaser trailer the series is set to be equally scandalous.

The eight-part adaptation is set to drop later this year on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally. It’s produced by ITV Studios shingle Happy Prince and written by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Laura Wade.

Exec producers include Treadwell-Collins, Wade, Cooper, Felicity Blunt and Disney+ scripted content director for EMEA Lee Mason.
