Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1955 on Monday, making California the first U.S. state to prohibit school districts from notifying parents if their child uses different pronouns or identifies as a different gender than what is on their school record.

The Governor’s office announced the signing among dozens of other bills without comment.

Susan Eggman, Chair of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, praised the move, stating, “Today is a great day for California.”

She added that the bill reaffirms California’s position as a leader and safe haven for LGBTQ+ youth.

AB 1955 specifically prohibits “forced outing” policies, which required schools to inform parents if students requested to use a different name or pronoun, Mercury News has reported.
