US Pressure on IRAN to Avoid BRICS: Another Failure of US Policies?
Iran’s president-elect, Masoud Pezeshkian, has revealed his foreign policy agenda for the first time since his election. He plans to enhance relationships with Persian Gulf Arab states, such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, while maintaining a critical stance towards the United States and Europe. Pezeshkian aims to strengthen regional ties to promote economic cooperation and stability, focusing on improving relations with neighboring Gulf countries to boost Iran's regional influence.
Pezeshkian's policy places a strong emphasis on deepening alliances with Russia and China. He has expressed support for initiatives to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict and stressed the importance of Iran’s alliances with these nations, aligning with his commitment to enhancing strategic cooperation with Russia, a key regional ally.
In a statement to the Tehran Times, Pezeshkian underscored the significance of Iran’s partnerships with Russia and China. He also highlighted Iran's recent inclusion in the BRICS group and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, as part of a broader strategy to pivot towards Eastern powers and strengthen ties with major non-Western countries.
In an op-ed for the Tehran Times, a state-run English-language newspaper, Pezeshkian sharply criticized Europe and the US for their handling of the 2015 nuclear deal and their support for Israel during its bombardment of Gaza. While he did not mention any plans to revive the accord, he emphasized his intention to pursue “constructive engagement with the world.”
Pezeshkian is also committed to fostering “mutually beneficial relations” with the Global South, particularly African countries. He plans to prioritize building ties with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
Statements from Iran's newly elected president firmly reject speculation by some Western media about Iran's potential inclination towards the West. These remarks emphasize that Iran's international policy is centered on strengthening ties with the Global South and BRICS nations, while also expanding alliances with neighboring Persian Gulf states. This strategic focus reflects Iran's commitment to diversifying its international relationships and reinforcing regional cooperation.
In this video, we explore the mutual benefits of the collaboration between Iran and BRICS, highlighting Iran's significant geopolitical position and its role as one of the world's major energy hubs.
