Aug. 25, 1964 | RFK Announces Senate Candidacy

Aug. 25, 1964 - Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy formally announced he is available for the Democratic nomination for Senator from New York — his first bid for elective office. His nomination was considered virtually assured.
The late President’s brother said President Johnson had promised to come to New York and help him campaign against incumbent Republican Senator Kenneth Keating.
The struggle between Keating and Kennedy shaped up as the hottest Senate race in the nation, second in interest only to the Presidential contest itself. Keating has refused to endorse Barry Goldwater and said he needed no help from the GOP Presidential nominee.
