Aug. 16, 1964 - Actor Paul Newman and Miss Charlotte Ford, 22-year-old daughter of Henry Ford 2d, hosted a fundraising barbecue for President Johnson’s Presidential campaign today at the 22-room estate of Mrs. Anne McDonnell Ford at Water Mill, L.I.
Four years ago, Mrs. Ford, who was divorced from her husband in February, was listed as a member of Volunteers for Nixon in Southampton, but Miss Ford said today that the whole family was for Mr. Johnson.
At the estate, portable barbecue pits had been set up, and 400 pounds of pork ribs were cooked in slabs. There also were 700 pounds of barbecued briskets and 200 large frying chickens. The party started at 5 p.m. By 7:30, there wasn’t a rib left or a chicken wing.
The 1,900 guests paid $15 each or $25 a couple, and the gross receipts were approximately $22,000. Beer, but no hard liquor, was served. The barbecue was one of a series sponsored by Young Citizens for Johnson, which will get the net proceeds.
President Johnson’s oldest daughter, Lynda Bird, made a brief speech and circulated among the guests, who included Mr. and Mrs. John Steinbeck.
