It triggered a rupture up to 400 km long along the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south through Myanmar. The rupture's propagation speed was comparable to that of a supersonic jet. However, what raises the greatest concern is the activation of the Siberian Plume — a massive stream of magma rising from deep within the Earth. Learn more about these events in this weekly overview of natural disasters that occurred from March 19 to 25, 2025. #SouthKorea The country faced some of the largest wildfires in its history. Since March 21, fires have burned over 38,600 hectares across the country. The flames damaged or completely destroyed at least 2,300 homes, as well as numerous agricultural structures. Nearly 38,000 people were evacuated. At least 28 people have died, and 32 were injured. Over 9,200 firefighters and rescuers, along with 105 helicopters, were involved in the efforts. Despite the massive response, the fires remain out of control due to strong winds and dry weather. #StormMartinho On March 19 and 20, a powerful storm named “Martinho” hit Portugal, bringing torrential rains and hurricane-force winds. The Greater Lisbon area was hardest hit, with at least 8 people injured. In Cascais, strong winds flipped several small aircraft at an airfield. The next day, March 21, “Martinho” moved into Spain. In the city of Águilas, 70 mm of rain fell in just one hour. In Madrid, continuous rainfall made March 2025 the wettest March on record. #Malaysia Starting March 19, relentless heavy rains hit the southern state of Johor. In six districts, river levels rose above danger thresholds, causing flash floods. In Kampung Pasir Tebrau, water rose so high that only rooftops remained visible. More than 13,000 people were evacuated and relocated to 95 temporary shelters. #SaudiArabia Extreme rainfall struck Saudi Arabia starting March 19. In the Riyadh region, three months’ worth of rain fell in just three days. In Jeddah, the amount of rainfall in two days matched the city’s annual average. In the Asir region, the downpours were accompanied by large hail, covering mountain peaks and roads in a winter-like landscape. #Russia A sharp warming caused an early ice breakup on the Sim and Gumbeika rivers in the Chelyabinsk region. In the city of Asha, the flooding began so rapidly that many residents couldn’t save their belongings or pets. On March 23, a powerful snow cyclone struck Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, dropping over 82 cm of snow in two days — more than the entire previous winter, according to local officials. In Primorsky Krai, two deep-focus earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and 4.4 occurred within 24 hours. Hundreds of temperature records were broken in Siberia last week. On March 19, Novosibirsk recorded its warmest day in 102 years. On March 20, among Russia’s top ten warmest locations were towns in the Altai Republic, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Irkutsk Region, and Khakassia. Even nighttime temperatures felt like summer in many areas. In Krasnoyarsk on March 21, the nighttime temperature was 22°C above the climatic norm! If there are still people who doubt the increase in natural disasters, Siberians are not among them — they are already feeling it firsthand. Local news and social media confirm: such changes are happening for the first time, and even longtime residents admit they’ve never seen anything like this. The important news is that scientists have discovered the cause of these anomalies. One of them is the giant magmatic plume rising from the Earth beneath Siberia. Today, it is not only causing anomalies in Siberia but also contributing to the global rise in natural disasters. To raise awareness, an international group of scientists supported by volunteers prepared a report titled “The Threat of a Magmatic Plume Breakthrough in Siberia and Ways to Address the Problem.” The report details alarming signs of plume activity: permafrost thawing, increased mud volcano activity, soil heating, rising seismicity, and more. In the U.S., a deadly storm unleashed nearly 100 tornadoes in three days, and in Brazil, a 200-year-old symbol of the city collapsed under strong winds. But another force destroys even faster than disasters — our ability to empathize. #UnitedStates From March 14–16, a powerful storm front swept the U.S., causing chaos and at least 42 deaths. Tornadoes, dust storms, heavy rains, and wildfires affected areas from California to Alabama. Missouri was hit hardest, with 12 deaths and over 500 homes destroyed in Poplar Bluff. Arkansas saw 10 tornadoes, including two EF4s — an event unseen for 28 years. #Peru Heavy rains triggered floods, mudslides, and landslides. On March 12, a mudslide buried 100 meters of a key highway linking Peru and Brazil. Several vehicles were swept away, killing at least three and leaving nine missing. #Spain On March 13, a powerful storm hit Torremendo, toppling trees, power lines, and building facades. The storm lasted just 10 seconds but left significant destruction. Miraculously, there were no casualties. #Brazil On March 12, São Paulo was hit by severe rains, hail, and winds that uprooted over 340 trees, including a historic 200-year-old one. Roads were blocked, and 174,000 homes lost power. A tree crushed a taxi, injuring passengers and killing the driver. In Rio de Janeiro, the storm disrupted transportation. #Italy On March 14, floods swept through Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. Florence saw a month’s worth of rain in hours, closing schools and public institutions. At least five tornadoes and hailstorms hit Ferrara. On March 13, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck Campi Flegrei at a depth of 2.5 km — the strongest ever recorded there. #Romania On March 13, storms hit Romania with heavy rains and winds. In Bucharest, 61 trees fell, damaging vehicles. A falling tree killed one person in Vrancea. The storm tore roofs off buildings and overturned a truck. As climate disasters increase, so do casualties. Survivors often say mutual aid saves lives, but in critical hours, emergency services may be unable to help. Psychologically, people empathize with a single victim, but as numbers rise, tragedy becomes statistics. Fear grows: "What if I’m next?" If disasters continue escalating, compassion may fade, replaced by selfishness. Scientists warn that without urgent action, climate disasters will reach catastrophic levels. Argentina On March 7, extreme weather hit the central provinces of Argentina, bringing heavy rainfall, strong storms with wind, and hail. The most severe destruction occurred in the port city of Bahía Blanca, where nearly five months' worth of rain fell within just a few hours. This also set a new daily rainfall record, doubling the previous 50-year maximum. The regional intensive care hospital named after Dr. José Penna was severely affected. Nurses carried newborns, still connected to medical equipment, to safety. Ecuador Less than four months ago, Ecuador was suffering from a severe drought, but now the country is experiencing the opposite extreme. Intense and prolonged rains have caused floods, landslides, and ground collapses. In March, the western provinces were hit the hardest, with 22 rivers overflowing and 25 more rapidly rising. On March 8, an extreme downpour in the city of Portoviejo, Manabí province, left some areas flooded up to an adult's neck. Tropical cyclone Alfred Meteorologists initially predicted that cyclone Alfred would dissipate over the ocean, as is typical for storms following a similar trajectory. However, on March 4, it unexpectedly turned westward and headed toward the Australian coast. In Gold Coast, flooding turned city streets into rivers, and bull sharks appeared in the floodwaters. In Brisbane, 275 mm of rain fell in just 24 hours, making it the wettest day in 50 years. The storm left 330,000 homes and businesses in Queensland without power — the largest weather-related blackout in the region’s history. Kazakhstan On the evening of March 7, residents of Almaty witnessed a rare natural phenomenon — snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Eyewitnesses said they had never seen anything like it before, and some even mistook the rumbling for an earthquake. USA An EF2 tornado struck Seminole County, Florida, on the morning of March 10, with wind speeds exceeding 185 km/h. The National Weather Service described it as a rare occurrence for central Florida, where only 10% of tornadoes reach EF1 or EF2 strength. Fox 35 News studio found itself in the direct path of the storm. During a live broadcast warning about the approaching tornado, it suddenly swept over the building. Spain Another powerful tornado hit the Spanish town of La Algaba, Seville province, on March 8, frightening local residents. Many, unfamiliar with tornadoes, mistook the roaring winds for a plane crash. The storm tore off roofs, damaged buildings, and downed power lines. Temperature anomalies At the beginning of March, Europe experienced an unusual heatwave, with temperature deviations exceeding 12°C above normal in some regions. On March 6, Croatia recorded +20°C, while Lithuania set a new national daily record at +18.4°C. Latvia saw its warmest start to March in recorded history. In Belarus, all 48 meteorological stations reported temperatures above early March’s previous absolute highs. In Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, temperatures nearly reached the typical highs of July and August, the hottest months of the year. Belgium broke its 1892 record, hitting +19.1°C. Meanwhile, in the UK, abnormally warm weather triggered a major wildfire on the heather moors of Greater Manchester. Turbulence On March 8, an incident occurred mid-flight on a Dubai-Istanbul route operated by Turkish Airlines. Passengers reported that the plane entered an area of extreme turbulence, which felt like sudden freefall. The increasing frequency of turbulence, unusual storm behavior, prolonged droughts, extreme rainfall, shifting wind patterns, and sharp temperature anomalies all stem from an imbalance in the ocean-atmosphere system caused by record-high ocean temperatures. If no action is taken, even more extreme climate events — far beyond previous norms — will emerge in the near future. To solve this global problem, scientists, policymakers, businesses, and the public must join forces. A rare earthquake has shaken the Siberian Arctic, raising concerns about new risks not only for Russia but for the entire world. Meanwhile, other regions are suffering from record-breaking rains, wildfires, and hurricanes. In the next few minutes, we will cover the climate events that occurred across the planet from February 26 to March 4. Spain Since late February, Spain has been hit by heavy rains, snowstorms, and floods. The regions of Murcia, Andalusia, and Valencia recorded record rainfall, reaching up to 258 L/m² in Castellón province. In Lorca, one person died while attempting to drive through a flooded riverbed. In Soria, around 500 vehicles were stranded. Japan On February 26, a wildfire broke out in the city of Ofunato, engulfing 2,100 hectares. Nearly 1,700 firefighters and 18 helicopters were deployed to battle the flames. A total of 84 buildings were damaged, and one person lost their life. February saw record-low precipitation in Ofunato — less than 10% of the normal level — worsening the fire hazard. Tropical Cyclone "Garance" On February 28, Tropical Cyclone "Garance" struck Réunion Island. Winds of up to 214 km/h and torrential rains destroyed infrastructure. Around 180,000 homes were left without electricity, water, and communication, and four people lost their lives. Southern Hemisphere On February 25, six tropical cyclones were simultaneously active in the Indian and Pacific Oceans — an event unseen in decades. This season has been exceptionally intense, with 22 recorded cyclones whose total energy is 30% above normal (according to the ACE scale). Afghanistan Since February 25, Afghanistan has been experiencing heavy rainfall, snowstorms, and flooding. At least 46 people have died, and over 200 homes have been destroyed. In February, a hailstorm and downpour in Farah province swept away several climbers during an ascent. On March 1, a landslide in Uruzgan destroyed a home. USA In early March, wildfires broke out in South and North Carolina. On March 1, a fire in Carolina Forest spread across 650 hectares, forcing evacuations. Strong winds and smoke reduced visibility, and schools moved classes indoors. India At the end of February, intense rainfall hit the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, triggering flash floods, landslides, and mudslides. More than 400 roads, including four national highways, were closed. On February 28, a massive avalanche buried a construction site near the village of Mana in Uttarakhand state. A total of 54 people were trapped under tons of snow. Rescuers managed to save 46, but tragically, eight lost their lives. Russia In Primorye, wildfires started two weeks earlier than usual, destroying 18 structures. Since the beginning of the year, 131 forest fires have been recorded in the Primorsky Krai, affecting more than 14,000 hectares. Since early 2025, Russia—including its Arctic region — has experienced increased seismic activity. However, particular attention is drawn to the M5.0 earthquake that struck the Krasnoyarsk Krai beyond the Arctic Circle on March 2. The epicenter was located 650 km from the city of Norilsk. Notably, an earthquake of this magnitude is highly unusual for the typically seismically quiet Taymyr region. According to the VolcanoDiscovery portal, this was the first recorded earthquake in this area since 1900. In the Kola Peninsula, above the Arctic Circle, there were no frosts even at night, with daytime temperatures reaching +5°C. Meanwhile, the southern regions faced abnormally cold weather with heavy snowfalls. In Krasnodar, Novorossiysk, and other areas of Kuban, water bodies froze over, forming ice ridges. In Sochi, snow fell not only in the mountains — where snowdrifts reached 3 meters — but also along the coast. Green lawns, palm trees, and flowers were covered in thick snow, an extremely rare phenomenon for this region. Georgia Heavy snowfall disrupted transportation in western Georgia, leading to train cancellations. In Kakheti, public transport was suspended, and in Poti, about 6,000 residents were left without electricity. In Batumi, where winter temperatures usually hover around +10°C, severe cold and heavy snowfall paralyzed the city, forcing round-the-clock cleanup efforts. Armenia On February 20, a powerful snowstorm hit Armenia, causing a transportation collapse. More than 1,000 accidents were reported in just one day. In the Mount Aragats area, snow cover reached 120 cm. Greece In northern Greece, temperatures dropped below -10°C. USA For the eighth time this winter, a powerful winter storm paralyzed dozens of states. Snowstorms caused travel chaos, with around 4,000 flights canceled nationwide. On February 19, Virginia Beach (Virginia) saw nearly 32 cm of snowfall. In Oswego County (New York), where over 180 cm of snow fell in just a week, the weight of the snow caused 26 building roofs to collapse. The Arctic cold and snowstorms led to more than 1,500 accidents and at least four deaths. In Detroit (Michigan), vehicles were frozen solid in ice after a massive water pipe burst. China On February 20, a massive avalanche struck Meili Xue Shan Mountain (Yunnan Province) after prolonged snowfall. Tourists caught in its path managed to take shelter in wooden structures, miraculously avoiding casualties or destruction. Authorities reminded the public: “Do not panic, and do not stop to watch!” This advice seems obvious, yet human behavior during disasters raises many questions. Why do people risk their lives — sometimes even the lives of their children — just for a dramatic photo near lava or for an adrenaline rush? Why do some choose to film avalanches or landslides instead of running to safety? Why, during earthquakes, do people prioritize saving material possessions instead of themselves? Even in situations without an immediate threat — such as heavy snowstorms — some insist on venturing out for trivial errands, only to require emergency rescue later… if they’re lucky. Observing global events, we find ourselves repeatedly asking: Why have people stopped seeing life as the highest and most irreplaceable value? Beyond climate, economic, and political crises, the core issue of our time is the crisis of valuing life itself. Survivors of life-threatening situations always say the same thing: "The most important thing is that I’m alive and my loved ones are safe." When we truly recognize the value of our own lives, we begin to appreciate the lives of others. The climate is giving us a chance to finally understand what truly matters. Of particular concern are deep-focus earthquakes, which occur at depths greater than 300 km. This report covers these unusual seismic events as well as other climate-related disasters that took place between February 12 and 18. Australia On February 14, Cyclone Zelia struck the Pilbara region with wind gusts reaching 290 km/h and torrential rains. Some areas received up to 500 mm of rainfall in just three days, leading to record-breaking floods. - Several ports in the region, including Port Hedland — one of the world’s largest iron ore export hubs — were forced to shut down. - The storm caused extensive damage to infrastructure, uprooted hundreds of trees, destroyed buildings, and severely impacted agriculture. Saudi Arabia Starting February 14, a severe storm with hail caused a sudden cold snap in western Saudi Arabia. - Heavy rains triggered flooding, while strong winds stirred up dust and sand. Waves in the Red Sea reached heights of up to 2 meters. - In the city of Taif, hailstorms created rushing ice-filled rivers. - In the capital, Riyadh, more than 6,500 emergency workers and 1,800 vehicles were deployed to respond to the crisis. United States - February 13: An atmospheric river hit California, bringing torrential rain, thunderstorms, and hurricane-force winds. The worst damage occurred in wildfire-ravaged southern areas, where the burnt ground repelled water like asphalt. This led to devastating mudslides, flash floods, and landslides. - In Malibu, a fire department vehicle carrying a firefighter was swept into the ocean by debris-filled floodwaters. Fortunately, the firefighter survived with minor injuries. - February 15–16: A powerful storm swept across the southeastern U.S., affecting over 128 million people. At least 10 fatalities were reported. - Kentucky was hardest hit, with up to 178 mm of rainfall recorded in some areas. River levels reached historic highs, submerging entire neighborhoods and more than 300 roads. Italy Extreme climate events continued across Italy: - Mount Etna: The volcano remains highly active, with explosive eruptions and lava flows stretching nearly 3 km. By February 19, a total of 647 tremors had been recorded. Greece - Earthquakes in the Santorini region have not ceased. Due to ongoing seismic activity, three additional Greek islands in the Aegean Sea have declared a state of emergency. - On February 18, two strong quakes measuring 5.1 magnitude struck between Santorini and Amorgos. Russia - On the morning of February 15, residents of the Altai Republic awoke to shaking walls, trembling beds, and swaying chandeliers. The cause was a 6.4-magnitude earthquake centered in the Kosh-Agachsky District. - The tremors were felt across Siberia, even on the lower floors of buildings in Barnaul. Neighboring countries, including Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China, also recorded aftershocks. Deep-Focus Earthquakes In just the first 50 days of this year, at least 123 deep-focus earthquakes (magnitude 4 or higher) have been recorded in Italy, Japan, Russia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Fiji, and other regions. - These types of earthquakes remain poorly understood by mainstream science because they occur at depths where the mantle material is highly plastic, making fractures unlikely — unlike in typical shallow earthquakes. - Why do these deep quakes form, and why are they especially dangerous now? At the beginning of 2025, there was a noticeable rise in volcanic and seismic activity. This review will focus on this topic. Santorini Island, Greece More than 11,000 people hurriedly left the Greek island of Santorini due to an intense swarm of earthquakes. Seismic activity in the region began on January 24. The earthquake epicenters were located along a tectonic fault near the Santorini and Kolumbo volcanoes. On February 1, the frequency and intensity of the tremors increased sharply, and within three days, the island was shaking every few minutes. Iceland On January 2, a series of underground tremors was recorded near the Grettirvatn volcano, lasting about 40 minutes. Notably, the last eruption of this volcanic system occurred in the 10th century AD. On January 14, a powerful swarm of earthquakes was detected in the northwestern part of the Bardarbunga caldera, with the strongest tremor reaching a magnitude of 5.1. What is particularly alarming is that the epicenter was at a very shallow depth—only 100 meters. Northern Mariana Islands The underwater Ahyi volcano, located in the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, is showing signs of activity. Satellite images from January 2, 10, and 18 revealed plumes of discolored water, a characteristic sign of volcanic activity. On January 9, underwater pressure sensors near Wake Island confirmed this activity. Indonesia In January 2025, Indonesia's Ibu volcano showed a sharp increase in activity. During the first 20 days of the month, it erupted more than a thousand times. Ethiopia Seismic and volcanic activity is also intensifying in the Main Ethiopian Rift. The Erta Ale volcano, famous for its persistent lava lake over the past decades, erupted on January 13, 2025. Lava not only filled the crater but also overflowed, reaching tourist camps for the first time in 20 years. Hawaii, USA On Hawaii’s Big Island, the eruption of Kilauea, which began in late 2024, continues. Since the start of the eruption, eight lava flows have been recorded, with the latest occurring on February 3. Additionally, thin strands of volcanic glass, known as Pele’s hair, have been found in nearby communities, posing a risk to human respiratory health. Supervolcanoes – A Major Threat Supervolcanoes pose an even greater threat. Their powerful eruptions in the distant past have caused global catastrophes, wiping out life on the planet. Today, large cities are often located in their giant calderas. Sakurajima volcano is located within the Aira Caldera, one of the most dangerous supervolcanoes on the planet. On January 20, Japan's Meteorological Agency reported increased volcanic activity. Several explosive eruptions occurred before the end of the month, with ash plumes rising up to 2,700 meters above the crater and large volcanic rock fragments flying up to 1,300 meters away. A series of anomalous cataclysms shook our planet this week. We offer a digest of events from March 22nd to 28th. 🔻 Earthquake M6.5 in Indonesia On March 22nd, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake rocked the Tuban area in East Java province. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea, approximately 70.8 miles northeast of Tuban, with a depth of 7.5 miles. This earthquake was preceded by two shocks of magnitudes 6.0 and 5.3. The Nairobi expressway was flooded knee-deep, creating obstacles for vehicular traffic. In Chun'an County, a red warning for thunderstorms and strong winds was issued. Strong winds knocked down a wall near the southern road of Huanchen in Taizhou County, where a car crashed. Massive hail, the size of eggs, caused significant damage to vehicles on the roads. 🔻 Anomalous Floods in Kazakhstan The spring flood became a real natural disaster for the residents of Kazakhstan. Villages, roads, private and multi-story houses were flooded in the regions of Kostanay, Aktobe, Akmola, Abai, and West Kazakhstan. Anomalous Hailstorm On the day of March 15, residents of Coahuila state, Mexico, faced a powerful storm accompanied by hail the size of a tennis ball or even a baseball (with a diameter of up to 10 centimeters). In the municipality of Sabinas, an 8-year-old girl named Victoria Tabares suffered a skull fracture when she was hit by a large hail on the head.
