Investigators report that Donald Trump, former US president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was targeted in an apparent assassination attempt at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Secret service agents surrounded Trump, killing one and injuring two, while the suspected shooter was also killed. It’s hard to put into words the seriousness of what happened – and what could have happened.

This needs to be a wake-up call for the country.
