Aug. 5, 1964 - The United States today accused North Vietnam of “acts of deliberate aggression” in the Gulf of Tonkin and warned it will not tolerate such aggression anywhere.
U.S. Navy blasted Communist torpedo boat bases and an oil depot along 100 miles of the North Vietnamese coast today in a fiery answer to two Red attacks on the U.S. destroyers Maddox and C. Turner Joy.
President Johnson, who ordered the raids to show that “deliberate, willful, and systematic aggression” will not go unpunished, asked Congress for its bipartisan support.
