Aug. 5, 1964 | Martin Luther King in St. Augustine, Fla.
Aug. 5, 1964 - A federal judge acted today to clear away a segregationist blockade and put the Civil Rights Act into operation at St. Augustine, Fla., beginning Saturday.
In a twin-purpose injunction, U.S. District Judge Bryan Simpson ordered operators of 15 restaurants and motels to serve Negroes on the same basis as white persons, and he ordered segregation leader Holsted Richard (Hoss) Manucy and his followers to abstain from interference.
Dr. Martin Luther King, who has led the integration movement in St. Augustine as well as elsewhere in the nation, tonight welcomed the injunction.
“Now the citizens of St. Augustine have an opportunity to live together in peace and harmony,” he said.
He said harmony could exist only in a climate of justice, and he appealed to the people of St. Augustine community to strive for justice.
