My wife's 1997 Toyota Camry with 2.2L 4cyl 5S-FE motor had check engine light, failed emissions, surged at idle and light acceleration, code P0505. The problem was grunge binding the Idle Air Control Valve. Remedies I have found on YouTube were either too vague or over simplified. Here is how I fixed mine and discovered an even simpler method you can use.

Please keep in mind that my engine configuration is California emissions. The plumbing around your IAC may differ slightly depending on year and California vs Federal emissions. My throttle body has THREE hoses. Hot water preheat inlet, outlet, and vent hose that, in my case, definitely terminates into the crankcase. I have been told some vent hoses do not terminate there, and some versions do not have a vent hose at all, just the preheat water lines. YMMV.
