Description:

Burundi, a landlocked country in the East African region, has a significant potential to increase its dairy production and productivity. The country's dairy sector is characterized by small-scale farming practices, limited access to quality feed and veterinary services, and inadequate breeding programs. To address these challenges, this project aims to introduce and promote improved dairy cattle breeds to enhance milk production and productivity in Burundi.

The project will focus on:

Introducing high-quality dairy cattle breeds that are well-suited to Burundi's climate and production systems.
Providing training and capacity-building for farmers on dairy farming practices, nutrition, and animal health management.
Developing a breeding program to improve the genetic merit of local dairy cattle.
Establishing a sustainable dairy value chain that connects farmers to markets and provides a stable income stream.
Promoting gender equity and social inclusion by empowering women in dairy farming and entrepreneurship.
