Repetitive movement portrays a ceremonial atmosphere in which the dancing is executed with strict regard for sacred geometrical patterns inducing a meditative trance-like state in the dancers and viewers alike.

Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis is based on the Deer Dance of the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico.

In the traditional dance, the male dancers, led by an elder, return from the mountains to the pueblo at sunrise, after gathering evergreens the previous day.
They dance facing the four directions throughout the day, singing praises for all the creatures of existence.
Suddenly, sometime before sunset, a signal is called out by the leader and the deer dancers scatter, symbolically running for their lives.
They are pursued by the women of the tribe whose families will be blessed with successful hunts and general good fortune if they catch a dancer, thereby participating in this ceremonial dance honoring life.
According to legend, if a dancer is not caught and does not return by sunset, he transforms into an actual deer.
As no one dares remain out past sunset, this performance depicts what might happen if one were to challenge the legend of the Deer Dance.

Belinda James - Biography

With dual interests in dance and art, Belinda James performed for ballet and opera companies and attended Parsons School of Design in NYC.
Her choreography has been presented worldwide and is archived at the Jerome Robbins Research Library of Lincoln Center.
She welcomes all exhibit opportunities of her eclectic artwork.
