Enigma of the blood-eating species

Look, I know how it sounds, but at the time I was working for an intelligence agency that started monitoring them. We scientifically understood that these people were a derived species of human beings who had a biological disposition that required them to digest a chemical compound, which was the composition of blood, as opposed to other dietary alternatives. Look, we'd start getting all these missing persons reports from this particular area in North America, which based on our geographic knowledge, supposedly had nothing but wilderness, but lo and behold, after a thorough surveillance of the area, we found something that looked like an unusual old town. We look at our cards, showing nothing, thinking, you know, what the hell is this? And after realizing that the place was infested with these creatures, we finally pulled one out after several failed attempts. The things we discovered in the tests that followed completely overturned much of our previously shared scientific beliefs. What are we talking about here? Friend, I speak, but I have watched our Chief Medical Analyst deliberately infect a subject with viruses worse than anything he could wrap his brilliant head around. And the thing's immune response absorbed her into oblivion in a matter of moments, but worse than that, a few weeks after capture, we made the big mistake of leaving the subject in her isolation unit alone with a single security guard on the facility.
