A Summit County patrol deputy stopped a wrong-way driver by directly crashing into them early Tuesday morning.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said shortly before 6:55 a.m., a pickup truck was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of US 40, around mile marker 15.

Summit County deputies traveled to that area, trying to locate the wrong-way driver, according to a Summit County Sheriff’s Office press release.

A deputy saw the wrong-way driver, traveling westbound in the left lane of the eastbound travel lane. The deputy intercepted the driver by putting his own car into the path of the truck. The head-on crash stopped the wrong-way driver.

The deputy was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, and has since been released.

The wrong-way driver reportedly sustained no injuries.
