The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a pretty common bird you might see in woods across the UK. These birds are about the size of a blackbird, with black and white feathers and a bright red patch under their tails. The males also have a red spot on the back of their heads. They're known for drumming on trees with their strong beaks, which they do to find food and to chat with other woodpeckers.
These clever birds eat insects they find in tree bark, and they're also quite fond of nuts and seeds. In spring, they make their nests in holes in trees, which they dig out themselves. The mum and dad take turns looking after their chicks, feeding them insects until they're ready to fly off.
Great Spotted Woodpeckers are here all year round, so you can spot them in any season. If you're lucky, you might see one at a bird feeder in your garden, especially if you put out some peanuts!
