Tripping on Travel: Air Line State Park, Pomfret, CT

The sounds of woodland birds take front and center in this video. The origin of the Air Line State Park Trail in CT goes all the way back to the opening in 1873 of a railroad, part of the Boston, Hartford and Erie Railroad (BH&E) system. It's use was originally envisioned as a passenger train route between New York and Boston. Much of what became the Air Line Railroad, however, was abandoned, dismantled, and the rails removed. As Wikipedia explains, "The abandoned rail corridor between East Hampton and the Massachusetts state line was acquired by the Connecticut State Park System with the section from Route 66 in Windham to US Route 44 in Pomfret opening to the public in 1969 as a bridle trail."

As unusual as it may seem that Connecticut made a state park out of an abandoned railroad line, it's use today as a walking and bicycling trail speaks to the benefit of doing so. State Parks are not to be held liable for accidents or injury. In fact, some signs will tell you as you enter a state park that visitors use it at their own risk. Some of the trail is more developed than other areas and has places to park. The crossing of the trail on Covell Rd in Pomfret is one spot that is not. The trail appears distinct, clean and reliable, and is well marked by a sign. But parking is very limited.
