Cats are weird with what they decide to respond to and what they don’t. Some cats are very talkative and others are not. The cat in this video is very responsive and enjoys singing along with his owner while he sings the classic children’s song “If You’re Happy And You Know It”. He does not exactly dance along to the song or clap but he puts in a few good meows.

So, what is the history of this particular children’s song. From some light research that we did, the song was originally published in the late 1950s in a variety of different books, a surprising number of them that were not actually children’s books. Instead, it appeared in project books, nursing home manuals and teacher’s books. The song is technically credited to Joe Raposo when a copyright was filed by Jonico Music in 1971. Raposo was a composer who is known for a number of famous chidlren’s song or music for children’s TV shows. He most famous work includes came from early work on Sesame Street.

If you have watched any Sesame Street you’ll recognize his work in the show’s theme song, Cookie Monster’s famous “C is for Cookie” and Kermit the Frog’s “Bein’ Green”. He also worked on The Electric Company, Madeline, and Curious George. Interestingly, the song is supposed to be very similar the song “Molodejnaya” which is a song from the Soviet musical Volga-Volga. Fun fact, or not so fun, by the RIAA went after a 12-year-old who downloaded a version of the song from the music sharing service, Kazaa. I think they ended up dropping that case. But anyway, now you know more about this song.
