Chicago: 109 shot, 19 fatally, in citywide holiday weekend violence

Since Wednesday evening, 109 people have been shot in Chicago, with 19 fatalities during the extended Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Superintendent Larry Snelling and Mayor Brandon Johnson have called for accountability for those responsible.

Despite adjustments like canceling police off days, Snelling emphasized the need for community cooperation to address the violence.

Mayor Johnson, who returned to the city for a community rally, called for more federal resources and highlighted the longstanding issue of black deaths in the country.

He stressed the importance of understanding the full context of the problem to implement effective solutions, ABC 7 has reported.
