"Life writes its own story." Strand Releasing has debuted their own official US trailer for the German film titled Rhinegold (originally written as Rheingold in German for their release), from the Turkish-German director Fatih Akin. This already opened in Germany back in 2022 - we posted the trailer back then as well. It didn't have much of an impact, and I doubt anyone in the US will be watching this movie either. Fatih Akin's Rhinegold captures the life of German hip-hop rapper, entrepreneur, and ex-convict Giwar Hajabi - best known by his stage name "X A T A R" or Xatar. Born to Kurdish parents in Iran, he was imprisoned in Iraq for being Kurdish. From the hell of that Iraqi prison, Giwar Hajabi came to Germany as a young boy with his family in the mid-1980s and fought through even more challenges to make a name for himself in music. Emilio Sakraya stars as Giwar, along with Mona Pirzad, Kardo Razzazi, Ilyes Raoul, Sogol Faghani, Hüseyin Top, Arman Kashani, plus Ensar "Eno" Albayrak als SSIO. Alas this still looks as uninteresting as any film could – stale filmmaking with nothing captivating about the story either. Meh.

Official Trailer for Biopic Doc 'Faye' All About Actress Faye Dunaway
By Alex Billington
Faye Dunaway Doc Trailer
"Before you make judgements, you have to look deeper." Max has revealed the official trailer for a biopic documentary film titled Faye, from acclaimed filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau. It just premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and will stream on Max starting this July. Here is the full Cannes intro: In Faye, the first feature doc about screen icon Faye Dunaway, the Academy Award-winning actor candidly discusses the triumphs & challenges of her illustrious career, with breakthrough roles in Bonnie & Clyde, Chinatown, and Network, while also reflecting on the film she views as a critical career misstep – Mommie Dearest. Through those reflections, she courageously explores personal discoveries: her struggles with mental health issues and bipolar disorder, her family history, and how the intensity of the characters she played still impacts who she is today. In addition to Faye, it includes interviews with her son Liam, as well as colleagues and friends such as Sharon Stone, Mickey Rourke, and James Gray. An honest portrait of a complex woman.

Maisy Stella Goes on a Formative Shroom Trip in 'My Old Ass' Trailer
By Alex Billington
My Old Ass Trailer
"The only thing you can't get back is time. It goes by so fast." Amazon MGM Studios has revealed an official trailer for an indie coming-of-age dramedy titled My Old Ass, which first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, also showing at the Provincetown & Sydney Film Fests. It's the latest feature from Canadian filmmaker Megan Park, produced by Margot Robbie, and set / shot up in Canada following a young woman at the end of her time living at home before she heads to university. A mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott face-to-face with her 39-year-old self - starring Aubrey Plaza as the "older" version of herself. But when Elliott's "old ass" delivers warnings, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, life, and love. She ends up tumbling into a romance with a worker boy named Chad, played by Percy Hynes White. My Old Ass stars Maisy Stella as Elliott, with Maddie Ziegler, Kerrice Brooks, Maria Dizzia, and Al Goulem. This has a different vibe than you might be expecting, it's not really a time travel film, it's more of a heartfelt coming-of-age flick made in Canada about respecting the process of growing up.

Mark Wahlberg Flies Over Alaska Thriller 'Flight Risk' Official Trailer
By Alex Billington
Flight Risk Official Trailer
"Tell me how to fly this thing - or we will die out here!" "Clearly you're mistaking me for someone who actually gives a sh*t." Lionsgate has revealed the first official trailer for Flight Risk, a survival thriller set onboard a small airplane flying over Alaska. This is the latest movie directed by Mel Gibson, but he doesn't actually star in it or appear at all, he's only behind the lens as the filmmaker. In this high-stakes suspense thriller, a private pilot transports an Air Marshal taking a fugitive to a trial. As they fly across the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem. This trailer shows most of what's happening - Wahlberg is the "real danger" who takes them for a spin on the wild side when they figure out who he is. Flight Risk stars Mark Wahlberg, Topher Grace, and Michelle Dockery. As hammy as this looks, it's actually fun to see Wahlberg as the bad guy, since he is so often playing goofy dads these days (see: The Union). It looks like it's thrilling enough to actually be properly entertaining. Strap in.

By Alex Billington
Rivals Teaser Trailer
"It' quite innocent." Get ready for some debaucherous 80s fun! Hulu has unveiled a quick teaser trailer for an upcoming series titled Rivals, adapted from the book of the same name written by Dame Jilly Cooper. Set within the social elite of 1980s England, Rivals stars Alex Hassell as Rupert Campbell-Black, an ex-Olympian & Member of Parliament who is described as "an incorrigible rake, and dangerously charismatic." David Tennant in turn plays Lord Tony Baddingham, controller of Corinium Television — and Rupert's single-mindedly ambitious and egotistical foe. Set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, Rivals delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986 – where it's every man and woman for themselves. This TV series also stars Bella Maclean as Taggie O’Hara, Katherine Parkinson as Lizzie, Nafessa Williams as Cameron Cook, Emily Atack as Sarah Stratton, Catriona Chandler as Caitlin O'Hara, with Oliver Chris, Danny Dyer, Rufus Jones, Lisa McGrillis, Luke Pasqualino, Claire Rushbrook, and Victoria Smurfit. Official Trailer for 'War Game' Realistic American Coup Simulation Doc
By Alex Billington
War Game Trailer
"Six hours to save democracy." Decal & Submarine Deluxe have unveiled an official trailer for a deeply unsettling, fascinating, unforgettable documentary film titled War Game, from directors Jesse Moss (The Overnighters, Boys State, Girls State, Mayor Pete, The Mission) & Tony Gerber. This first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and caused quite a stir, attracting plenty of attention. The film is a "real-life political thriller" set on January 6, 2025 – War Game imagines a nation-wide insurrection in which some members of the US military defect in support of the losing Presidential candidate, while the winning candidate and his many advisors—played by an all-star roster of senior officials from the last five administrations (who actually know these jobs)—war games the crisis in the White House situation room. They have 6 hours to save democracy as the country teeters on the brink of civil war. In this doc, prestigious US officials simulate a coup after a disputed election. Insurgents take capitals, questioning the president's military control. Countering disinformation is vital, while highlighting bipartisan defense of democracy. It's a frightening look at something that could really happen - and how it might play out. Take a look if you dare.

Impressive Full Trailer for 'Batman: Caped Crusader' Animated Series
By Alex Billington
Batman: Caped Crusader Trailer
"We could be looking at an all-out gang war on the streets of Gotham." Prime Video has revealed the full official trailer for a kick ass new animated series called Batman: Caped Crusader, arriving for streaming in August this summer. Another fresh new take on Batman in animated form, this time it's developed by Matt Reeves as he continues to work on his The Batman sequel (and The Penguin spin-off series). It's also co-developed by J.J. Abrams and Bruce Timm. Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear. Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the Batman. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies, but his heroic actions will also spawn unforeseen consequences. It's described as a "re-imagining" though this also seems to be an animated update based on The Batman movie. With the voices of Hamish Linklater as Bruce/Bats, Christina Ricci as Catwoman, Jamie Chung as Harley Quinn, Diedrich Bader as Harvey Dent, Mckenna Grace, Minnie Driver, Reid Scott, Jason Watkins, Tom Kenny, and John DiMaggio. There was the 1980s video game called Batman: The Caped Crusader, but this looks a lot like the classic 90s Batman Animated Series series as well.

Dylan Sprouse & Callan Mcauliffe Fight Over a Girl in 'The Duel' Trailer
By Alex Billington
The Duel Trailer
"All of this is crazy." Lionsgate Movies has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy called The Duel, marking the feature directorial debut of two young filmmakers Justin Matthews (Upgraded, "The Morning Show") and Luke Spencer Roberts. This originally premiered at the 2023 Mammoth Film Festival last year and it played at a few other small festivals. Not to be confused with the 2016 western also called The Duel with Woody Harrelson. In this one, when Woody (no connection to Harrelson) finds out his best friend has been sleeping with his girlfriend, he challenges him to a duel, taking their friend group across the border to a mysterious and stunning estate. When two of their friends join the act, the once inseparable group of men inch closer to the day of destiny and test the bonds of their relationship until the moment of no return. The film stars Dylan Sprouse (who also executive produced) & Callan McAuliffe, with Denny Love, Hart Denton, María Gabriela De Faría, Rachel Matthews, Christian McGaffney, Ronald Guttman, and Patrick Warburton. Alas this looks extra dumb and supremely campy – entertaining only for some.

Mark Wahlberg + Halle Berry in Netflix Spy Comedy 'The Union' Trailer
By Alex Billington
The Union Trailer
"We're looking for street smarts over book smarts." Netflix has launched an official trailer for a spy comedy called The Union, one of their summer movie offerings debuting in August in a few months. This looks like another generic action comedy like so many Netflix has already made before (must be the algorithm telling them what to do, right? They have to be chasing this data!). Mark Wahlberg stars as Mike, a down-to-earth construction worker from Jersey, who is quickly thrust into the world of super spies and secret agents when his high school ex-girlfriend Roxanne recruits him on a high-stakes US intelligence mission. Isn't this also similar to the recent "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" series, too? Though it also looks like Men in Black mashed up with Hit Man with a Mark Wahlberg script. The impressive ensemble cast also includes Halle Berry, Mike Colter, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jessica De Gouw, Alice Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, and J.K. Simmons. Filming in 2022 took over the tiny, picturesque seaside village of Piran, Slovenia; it also shot in Jersey, London and other cities. This seems like it was (poorly) written by A.I. just for streaming audiences.

Elizabeth Banks in Beauty Revenge Thriller 'Skincare' Official Trailer
By Alex Billington
Skincare Trailer
"Beauty's an ugly business." Ain't that the truth. IFC Films has revealed the first official trailer for a crime thriller called Skincare, a new film from director Austin Peters (known for his distinct docu-drama style of filmmaking – seen in his work with artists like Orville Peck, Diplo, Chvrches, Rae Sremmurd). This is set to open in limited theaters in August at the end of this summer. Famed aesthetician Hope Goldman's skincare business faces sabotage when rival Angel Vergara opens a boutique right across the street. Aided by friend Jordan, Hope seeks to uncover who's trying to ruin her reputation. She becomes convinced this rival is out to sabotage her business and destroy her life. How far will she go for revenge? Elizabeth Banks stars as Hope, with Lewis Pullman, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Michaela Jaé (MJ) Rodriguez, and Nathan Fillion (!!). "People love a scandal. The internet is full of sickos." While this seems similar to The Substance (my review), it actually reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop and how ridiculous beauty obsession is in Los Angeles (and elsewhere). It looks like a wild and crazy good time! What is she up to? Check it out below.
