After seven years of construction, China has opened the new Shenzhen-Zhongshan Line, a 24km system of bridges and underwater tunnels connecting two cities on opposite banks of the Pearl River Delta.
This architectural marvel has broken 10 world records, including the longest span for a sea suspension bridge and the widest underwater tunnel. Reducing travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan from two hours to 30 minutes, the line will become an important part of the region's transport infrastructure, facilitating movement through one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
Western experts ridiculed the project and predicted that China would need 300 years to build the bridge.
