On May 13, 2024, at 8:04 a.m., Deputies assigned to the Riverside Alternative Sentencing Program responded to a residence in the 3300 block of Albillo Loop in Perris to conduct a probation compliance check. During the compliance check deputies encountered multiple subjects in the backyard of the residence. One of the subjects gave a false identification and started walking away, disregarding the deputy's commands to stop.

In an attempt to gain compliance, the deputy deployed a Taser, but it was ineffective and the suspect continued to walk away. The suspect then produced a handgun, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire, and deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The suspect was identified as, 42-year-old Lucas Michael Rutledge, a resident of Menifee. Rutledge was armed with an un-serialized 9mm handgun.
